The Big Brand Era
Are brands today more powerful than the designers behind them? It’s a complicated question that hung over a turbulent fall collections season headlined by designer comings and goings at Yves Saint Laurent, Jil Sander and Tod’s, among others.

Vivienne Westwood Red Label
RTW Fall 2012
This was a more grown-up collection than previous seasons, and the designer remained true to her sartorial roots with a surfeit of checks and tartan, as well as signature draping. Elegant, jersey draped dresses in pale gray and eggplant, sharp tailored suits in rich wools, and tartan pencil skirts added a smart and sophisticated air.

Proenza Schouler RTW Fall 2012
It’s no secret that Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez view each runway collection as an opportunity to shred their previous show, do something totally different and knock it out of the park — which they did again for fall, providing one of the New York season’s few moments of significant fashion news. So spring’s retro kitsch of bustier tops and bad car interiors was out; a minimalist streak done in maxed-out silhouettes was in, at least at the outset.

Rick Owens Men’s RTW Fall 2012
A master of dark and droopy dressing, Rick Owens sharpened up his act for fall, displaying a more chic and masculine alter ego. The look was graphic and striking, with the opening drop-crotch pants recalling Thirties zoot suits.
